We didnât have to walk long before reaching the caveâs exit. It led out to a huge circular space surrounded by cliffs at least five times my height. With our supernatural strength, weâd easily be able to scale the cliffs. Humans wouldnât stand a chance.
In the center of the circle, wide steps led up to a pristine marble palace surrounded by floor to ceiling columns. Wolves prowled the base of the steps. A woman with long dark hair sat at the top, singing as she wove colorful threads through a gigantic loom.
Circe.
She stopped singing, turned to us, and grabbed something that had been resting by her side.
A golden staff.
She stood and adjusted her tiara. In her yellow and blue draping gown, she looked like a goddess from the storybooks. âWelcome, travelers,â she said with a smile. âWhat brings you to my humble abode?â
I stifled a laugh. The palace behind her could hardly be described as humble.
âWe were supposed to meet our tour guide on the island,â Reed said sheepishly. âBut we canât find anyone anywhere. Then we heard your singing and followed it here. We were hoping you could help us.â
âThe tour companyâs called Exumaâs Excellent Adventures,â Sage piped in. âHave you heard of it?â
âAh, of course,â Circe said. âIâm afraid youâre early. They wonât be here for another hour or so. Why donât you come inside and join me for a late lunch while you wait?â
She had to be lacing her words with magic. No one in their right mind would believe it was too early for the tours to have started.
âThat would be amazing.â I smiled and held tighter to my towel. âIâm starving.â
We climbed the steps and followed her through a magnificent hall. âIâm Circe,â she said as she opened the doors to a surprisingly cozy dining room. âIâve lived on this island since way before it became a tourist destination.â
âYou have a lovely home,â I said with a hopefully vapid smile.
âThank you, my dear.â She motioned to the cushioned chairs. âPlease, have a seat. Iâll be back with your meals in a moment.â
We sat down, placing our towels close by our sides.
Five minutes later, Circe wheeled in a trolley with five bowls of soup, spoons, and glasses of wine. The soup was dark yellow with chunks of vegetables, and smelled delicious. She gripped her staff in one hand the entire time.
It was so tempting to make a go for the staff right then. But we needed to catch her as unaware as possible. Which meant waiting until she thought we were drunk on her magic.
âPottage of cheese stew,â she said as she placed a bowl in front of each of us. A sweet scent of magic that smelled like honey drifted up from it. âMy specialty.â
Circe placed the final bowl at the head of the table, sat down, and we all dug in.
The moly better work, I thought as I lifted the spoon to my mouth and took my first bite.
The stew tasted as good as it smelled.
